Black Barn Farm Events

At Black Barn Farm we grow over 90 varieties of apples and these are grown each year WITHOUT the use of chemical fertilisers and artificial pesticides. All our trees are inoculated with mycorrhizal fungi before planting and weeds are kept at bay using well composted woodsy mulch.

While all trees are available for pre purchase online from 1 April, collection day is not until 7 August . PRE PURCHASE IS NOT COMPULSORY BUT IT IS ADVISED. Head to our on-line store to pre-purchase.

Our bare rooted trees vary between 0.50-1.0m and can be shipped to all states except TAS, NT and WA.

New for 2021 are our apple tree packs. Do you want your own backyard apple orchard but don’t want the hassle of working out which variety, pollination dates and ripening times? Well grab one of our apple tree packs where we have selected some of our favourite apple trees that will pollinate each other and give you a long fruiting season. Instant apple orchard as easy as that!

New for 2021 is $20 fixed price packaging and postage no matter how many trees you buy. Sorry we can’t ship to TAS/WA/NT due to quarantine regulations.

Please note that we lift the trees from our nursery when fully dormant in mid July and we will begin processing and posting orders from then on in the order they were placed. You will receive an email update once your order is picked and posted.

For those wanting to collect from the farm and ask all those burning questions, we are open from 10am – 4pm on Saturday 7th August.

Join us at Black Barn Farm in our old apple packing shed during while the moon is waxing and the sap is starting to flow as you learn the ancient art of grafting your very own fruit trees.

Charlie will take you through the different types of grafts, why graft at all, best time of year to graft, knife safety, rootstocks, scion wood and permaculture tips and tricks. You will be taken through a grafting demonstration and of course coaching through plenty of grafting practice before you eventually try your skills on your very own apple trees to take home.

Pocket knives are cool for whittling sharp sticks to poke TV celebrities with however they are dangerous and ineffective for grafting (we’ll show you why). Felco Swiss made grafting knives are available for sale for $30 at the ticket checkout page, just after you enter your name and details, there will also be some available for sale for $35 on the day and of course feel free to BYO grafting knife.

This workshop is limited to just 25 tickets so book early, the last four years have sold out.

*Root stock and scion wood for additional varieties/trees over the two you select for your ‘take home’ trees is available on the day for: $5 per scion piece and $7 per root stock. (*dependent on scion wood availability)

Permaculture is so much more than a way to garden, grow food or even design a space, it’s an immersive and considered way of living life; how we connect with others, the lens we place over challenges , the way we respond to feedback, our connection to the natural world.

It’s an individual journey that is for each of us to interpret in our own way. While there are absolute skills to absorb; practical, functional, sensible skills, permaculture is not a formula that can be applied, rather its a shift in the way we live.

With over four decades of global renown, the movement has settled into its place with evidence based ‘proof in the pudding’ which has allowed Permaculture a considerable growth surge in the last 10 years.

Undertaking a full 14 day permaculture design certificate course might seem like a big first step. So we are offering a one day Introduction to Permaculture.

The Black Barn Farm one day introductory program has been designed to provide an overview of what Permaculture is while also sharing personal anecdotal stories about our individual journeys.  It is interactive and immersive so also includes a farm tour which allows you to see active interpretations of each of the Permaculture principles.

We will share a pot luck lunch* together and provide much opportunity to ask as many questions as you need.

The day will be delivered by highly regarded Permaculture educator, David Arnold, founder of Murrnong Farm and supported by Charlie Showers and Jade Miles founders of Black Barn Farm.

* POT LUCK LUNCH – These are the most exciting way to feast as the range of food on the table is vast and varied. Everyone contributes something – ideally fresh from your own garden or kitchen. Of course it’s ok to bring something store bought too.
