Open Farm Day – Sat 10th November 2018
Back by popular demand we will be throwing open our gates and inviting you in to see a commercial scale permaculture orchard and nursery in its infancy. Established as a new horticultural operation in 2016, Black Barn Farm is still some years off producing fruit for pick your own and local markets however this is a rare chance to see the application of permaculture design philosophy at the crucial first steps of a new farming business.
The day will begin with Jade outlining the business and farm vision before Charlie talks you through the farm design then we’ll head out for a walk and talk through the newly planted orchard and berry rows, tree nursery and solar irrigation set-up. There will be plenty of time to discuss the key components of the orchard design including keylines, woodsy compost, mycorrhizal fungi, understory plantings, grafting and rootstock selection, weed and pest control, animal integration and diversification.
As is custom with new friends we would like to invite you to join us for a potluck lunch in our old apple packing shed after the farm tour. If you wish to stay for lunch please bring along a plate to share, ideally home grown or local produce however we understand life is busy and that isn’t always possible.
